About the Artwork

The artworks featured in the Contrasts exhibition are part of the the Infinity series. The choice of the ancient cyanotype process, one of the earliest form of the photographic medium, is deeply linked to an ecological consciousness with the use of fragile, low-grammage washi papers.

The process involves physical contact with the paper and several steps where every hand gesture is essential. The physical print existence is intimately related to the natural elements she uses in this process - the sun, the plants, the minerals, the mulberry fibre support - leaving physical inscriptions through direct contact with the photographic materials, further connecting the materiality and the environment.

The Infinity series manifest my sustained and transitory intimacies, experiencing beyond the restraints of body and its place in the world with the nude as an expression of the original and pristine Being, and as a vehicle for revealing hidden truths and emphasizing its bond to the natural world.

The addition of silver or gold leaf to a cyanotype extends the historical dialogue between photography and precious metals. Early photographic processes were deeply tied to metal chemistry, and this gesture echoes traditions of gilding used in manuscripts, icons, and early image-making. Applied by hand, the delicate leaf adheres to selected areas of the print, catching light and creating subtle shifts in reflection. The process is slow and meticulous, requiring patience and precision. It transforms the cyanotype into an object where photographic image and artisanal craft coexist.

About the Artist

Maria Baoli (b. 1984, Madrid, Spain) is an artist based in Brussels, Belgium. After studying communication and marketing in France and Spain, she graduated with honors in photography from the Agnรจs Varda School of Visual Techniques in Brussels in 2016. In 2017, she received the SOFAM La Mรฉdiatine Prize and was selected for .tiff by the FOMU museum in Antwerp.

Her practice explores memory, space, and identity, often collaborating with her subjects to open a dialogue that generates questions rather than fixed answers. Working across physical and non-physical spaces, Baoliโ€™s work emphasizes materiality through processes such as cyanotype on fragile Japanese washi paper, tracing ephemeral marks of presence and belonging.

Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Belgium, Latvia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
